Robert Kajoro – Founding Member & First Chairman

Robert, then Project Accountant of SOS Children’s Villages Uganda, was the brain behind Wamu Sacco.

“The idea would have not come to fruition if it was not the support of Mr. William Ddamulira, the then National Coordinator. His support in starting the Savings Society was valuable. He presented the idea to the Board, who approved it and that saw the birth of SOS Wamu“.

Robert and William became the first contributors and popularised the idea to the rest of the staff, who welcomed it.

SOS Wamu was adopted as the name of the Savings and Credit Society. The staff were excited about the idea, particularly after learning that interest rates were very competitive and the profits made are shared among members. The society has since grown over the years, now covering all the four SOS locations countrywide.

“As a founding Chairperson, I am profoundly delighted to witness the amazing  growth  members of SOS Wamu have enjoyed as a result of the Savings and friendly credit terms. I have seen children of Wamu Members graduate, land acquired, buildings raised, businesses started and life challenges resolved with the support from Wamu. 

Personally, the flexible credit has enabled me to acquire land in my home village, where I have started my pet project – coffee farming. Thank you Wamu.“

William Ddamulira – Founding Member & Former National Director

“I saw the humble beginning of WAMU as a small initiative by a few SOS staff early 2001, and seeing the society grow to what it is now, supporting its many members to pay for their children’s education, acquire land and build a home, nothing could be a greater blessing“.
